Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Religious leaders have long been recognized as influential figures in shaping social and political behaviors within their communities. In Birnin Kebbi LGA, Kebbi State, religious leaders play a key role in promoting political participation, particularly during election periods. Sermons delivered by religious leaders have the potential to influence the political attitudes and behaviors of their congregations. This study seeks to examine the role of religious leaders in promoting political participation in Birnin Kebbi, with a particular focus on election sermons. Religious leaders are often trusted figures who can mobilize voters, shape political ideologies, and encourage civic engagement (Ibrahim & Lawal, 2023). This research aims to explore the extent to which religious leaders in Birnin Kebbi LGA use their platforms to promote active participation in political processes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized influence of religious leaders in shaping political behavior, there is limited research on how their sermons during election periods impact voter participation. In Birnin Kebbi LGA, religious leaders may use their sermons to either encourage or discourage participation in elections. The specific role they play in promoting or hindering political engagement remains under-explored, and this study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how election sermons influence voter participation in the region.
